About this opportunity:

Ericsson's mobile networks are used all over the world with a typical deployment of baseband units (BBU) and radio units (RU). Between these units, fiber-optical links (so-called fronthaul links) are used with varying distance and capacity. For each new mobile network generation, such as present 5G and emerging 6G, the required capacities grow, which challenges the fundamental limits of the optical and electrical components used for optical transmission. To combat these limitatation, advanced digital signal processing can be used for equalization, shaping, nose reduction, error-correction etc. Such advanced methods wilkl be investigated mainly by Matlab sumiltions in this thesis The results impact technical systems studies, networks standardization (eg ITU, IEEE, OIF, MOPA) and product development.

What you will do:

The following steps are envisioned as part of the thesis work:
  1. Survey the literature and Matlab community to identify suitable advanced digital signal processing concepts and algorithms.
  2. Implement selected such concepts and algorithms and integrate with existing Matlab fiber optical communications framework (developed in previous Master thesis).
  3. Analyze, compare and refine the implemented concepts and algorithms in full system simulations.
  4. Implement a user- frienldy interface for the full system simulations where different blocks can be added/removed with simple setting of key parametes.

The thesis will be concluded with a report and presentation for the Ericsson team.

The skills you bring:

This project aims at students in electrical engineering and similar. Knowledge in digital signal processing and digital communication systems are required. Knowledge in optical systems is beneficial.
