About the role

We are looking for a Head of Development to lead the development domain within our engineering organization and ensure strong delivery capability, technical quality, and long-term system health.

You will lead our development teams and shape how we build, evolve, and operate our product systems. The role is responsible for the organization's structure, technical direction, and ability to deliver reliable, high-quality software.

The CTO defines the company's overall technology strategy. The Head of Development reports to the CTO and ensures the development organization and systems evolve in alignment with that strategy.

The role combines organizational leadership, architectural oversight, and technical strategy. While strong technical credibility is important, the focus is on building effective teams, guiding technical direction, and ensuring engineering operates at a high level of quality and productivity.

To be effective in this role, you will develop a strong understanding of the company's business, product domains, and customer needs in order to identify technical opportunities, support innovation, and ensure that engineering solutions meaningfully support the business.

The development organization currently consists of 10 in-house developers across multiple teams and will continue to grow as the company scales.

What you will do

Lead the engineering organization

You will build and lead a strong development organization.

Responsibilities include:

• Hiring, performance management, compensation, and career development
• Shaping team structure and organizational capability
• Owning resource planning, staffing strategy, and budget for the development domain
• Supporting team leads and tech leads to ensure teams operate effectively and engineers can grow and perform

Guide technical direction

You will ensure that architectural work led by Tech Leads evolves in a sustainable direction aligned with the company's technology strategy.

This includes:

• Reviewing architectural proposals and technical trade-offs
• Ensuring systems remain maintainable, scalable, and reliable
• Supporting Tech Leads in evolving system architecture responsibly as the company grows

Ensure delivery capability

You will ensure the development organization has the capacity, capability, and structure required to deliver the product roadmap sustainably.

This includes:

• Establishing effective development processes
• Supporting strong collaboration between engineering and product teams
• Ensuring teams deliver consistently without compromising system quality
• Maintaining visibility into delivery capability and technical risks

Drive engineering excellence

You will strengthen engineering standards across the development organization, including:

• Code quality
• Testing practices
• System reliability
• Maintainability

You will work with Tech Leads to improve development practices, manage technical debt, and ensure systems remain healthy over time.

Evolve the engineering toolchain

You will ensure the engineering organization stays current with modern development practices and tooling.

This includes:

• Adopting tools and practices that improve developer productivity
• Evaluating emerging engineering tooling, including AI-assisted development
• Supporting continuous improvement of the development environment

Collaborate across product and engineering

You will work closely with the CTO, product leadership, and other engineering leaders to ensure engineering execution supports the company's product strategy.

Product teams own roadmap prioritization. Your responsibility is ensuring the engineering organization has the technical foundation, capability, and structure required to deliver successfully.

What we're looking for

We are looking for someone who combines strong engineering leadership with deep technical credibility.

You likely have:

• Significant experience leading software engineering teams
• A strong background in software architecture and modern system design
• Experience scaling engineering teams and organizations
• Strong understanding of engineering practices, system reliability, and maintainability
• Experience working closely with product teams in a product-driven organization
• The ability to guide architectural decisions and challenge technical assumptions

You do not need to code day-to-day, but you should be technically capable of reviewing architecture and engaging deeply with engineers on technical decisions.
