Stegra is on a mission to change the global steel industry by producing green hydrogen, iron, and steel - with the goal of eliminating CO₂ emissions. Instead of coal, we use green hydrogen and fossil-free electricity, meaning our primary emissions will be water and heat.By 2030, our ambition is to produce 5 million tonnes of green steel annually at our fully integrated, digitized, and sustainable plant in Boden, Northern Sweden, currently under construction. But this is just the beginning. Our expertise in green hydrogen will enable us to decarbonize industries beyond steel, paving the way for a cleaner future.
What you'll do
The Engineering & Design Manager is responsible for leading multidisciplinary engineering (Process, Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation) for a large-scale green hydrogen and green direct reduced iron (DRI) facility during commissioning and the transition to stable operations, including optimization, debottlenecking, and brownfield engineering improvements.
This role is part of the Technology function and serves as the key interface between project execution, commissioning, and plant operations, ensuring design intent is maintained while enabling safe, reliable, and optimized plant performance.
Key responsibilities (not limited to)
Lead and manage core engineering disciplines, including Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation & Automation (E&I).
Lead and govern the Management of Change (MoC) process by evaluating technical deviations and operational learnings, approving and validating design modifications, as well as ensuring proper documentation, risk assessment, and stakeholder alignment.
Establish and maintain robust engineering governance for commissioning and early operations.
Ensure alignment of engineering activities with technology standards, design intent, and plant performance targets.
Safeguard design integrity across green hydrogen and DRI systems throughout commissioning and operations.
Interface with EPC contractors, OEMs, and licensors to resolve design clarifications and technical deviations.
Review and validate vendor documentation, technical queries, and engineering deliverables.
Ensure vendor compliance with design specifications, contractual requirements, and performance guarantees.
Lead and implement design development / reverse engineering activities for underperforming and repeated failure equipment and processes, to increase the reliability of the operational DRI & HMP units.
Identify and implement technology upgrades, retrofits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Improve overall plant efficiency and carbon footprint.

Experience in greenfield projects, commissioning, or start-up phases. Experience working with ISO standards (ISO 9001,ISO 14001,ISO 45001).
Competences and Skills
Strong knowledge of hydrogen production and DRI processes.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and develop diverse teams.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to produce clear and structured technical documentation. Familiarity with relevant industry regulations and standards.
Very good oral and written communication skills in English. Basic Swedish skills are considered as an advantage.
