About the role

The positions involve teaching undergraduate courses in mathematics and/or mathematical statistics at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg. This includes basic courses in programmes for engineers, mathematicians, computer scientists and natural scientists, but may also include supervision of degree projects, teaching advanced courses and management assignments within undergraduate education. The role of Teaching Faculty represents a long-term academic teaching career with a focus on pedagogical excellence and the development of education.

About the division and department

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg, with about 200 employees, is one of the largest departments of mathematics in the Nordic region. Within the department there are three divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory as well as Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

Main responsibilities

The main duties involve teaching at the first and second cycle levels.
As a Teaching Fellow, you will:
  • teach mathematics or mathematical statistics at all undergraduate levels
  • develop and revise courses and programmes
  • integrate new knowledge and research into education
  • contribute to the pedagogical environment through reflection and collegial learning
  • engage in utilisation and academic citizenship, for example through collaboration with schools or participation in internal committees
  • take responsibility for course development and pedagogical development work; contribute to the development of educational programmes and teaching and learning environments

Up to 20% of working time may be used for participation in research or other forms of competence development, in dialogue with your manager.

Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in mathematics or mathematical statistics, or equivalent competence
  • Documented teaching proficiency and experience in teaching mathematics or mathematical statistics at university level.
  • Ability to design and develop courses with a reflective and critical approach.
  • Strong ability to combine subject expertise with understanding of student learning based on educational research and proven experience.
  • Higher education pedagogical training in accordance with current SUHF recommendations.
  • Experience in course development at higher education level.
  • Good ability to collaborate and interact with others.
  • Good ability to express oneself orally and in writing in both Swedish and English.

Higher education teaching training in accordance with SUHF's recommendation, which includes higher education teaching courses of at least 15 credits, is required for employment as a Teaching Fellow. If the requirement for higher education teaching courses has not yet been fulfilled, employment may be offered as an Assistant Teaching Faculty member. The employee is then expected to meet the requirements within two years and may subsequently be promoted to Teaching Faculty.

Meritorious
  • Documented teaching proficiency and experience in teaching at first and second cycle levels.
  • Documented experience of and interest in educational development work and educational leadership are highly meritorious.
  • Experience of collaboration with primary or secondary schools or other relevant parts of society is meritorious.

Terms of employment
