Subject area description

The subject Dramatic Performance with a focus on singing in musical drama involves the teaching of opera singing.

Duties

The role is based within the Musical Drama Performance team, but there may also be duties in other departmental teams and within the wider faculty.

The teaching falls largely within the Opera programme, at both Bachelor's and Master's level. You may also be required to teach on other programmes. The teaching is carried out in Swedish and English.

The core duty is to teach singing, both individually and as masterclasses. You need to be able to accompany students on the piano during singing lessons. As a senior lecturer you are also expected to be a driving force in the development of the subject both pedagogically and artistically, including through artistic development work.

The time spent on development and research is included in the role, as set out in the University of Gothenburg's working hours agreement for teaching staff.

There will also be administrative duties such as conducting admission tests, study reporting and work on course syllabuses.

Eligibility

Eligibility for appointment as a teacher is regulated in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's Appointment Procedures.

To be eligible for appointment as a Senior Lecturer in an artistic discipline, a person must have demonstrated teaching proficiency and either hold an artistic doctoral degree, have demonstrated artistic proficiency, or possess other professional expertise relevant to the subject area and the duties included in the position.

Assessment criteria

Assessment is based on artistic proficiency and teaching proficiency.

Artistic proficiency means that the applicant has:
  • Knowledge/expertise/skills in professional opera singing
  • Documented personal experience as a professional opera singer

Teaching proficiency means that the applicant has:
  • Knowledge/expertise/skills in teaching singing on an opera programme within higher education
  • Documented strong ability to lead teaching from the piano
  • Documented strong ability to express themselves in spoken and written form, in both Swedish and English, plus good experience of teaching in a Scandinavian language and in English.
  • Basic knowledge of the languages that commonly occur in opera.

In addition, attention will be given to whether the applicant has:
  • Knowledge/expertise/skills in artistic development work and research in the field
  • Good collaboration and communication skills
  • Broad knowledge of the classical song repertoire
  • Administrative skills

Candidates who have not previously completed the higher education teaching courses provided by the University (or equivalent) are expected to do so within the first two years of employment.

We will primarily consider the person who, after an overall assessment of documented qualifications, competences and expertise, is deemed best able to carry out the relevant duties and contribute to the positive development of the Academy.

Employment

Type of employment: Chapter 4, section 10 of the Higher Education Ordinance - Teachers in disciplines in the fine, applied or performing arts. Three years with potential for extension. The total period of employment may be no longer than ten years.

Scope: The employment corresponds to 50-70% of full time, with the exact scope determined based on the candidate's competence profile, personal preferences, and the needs of the organization.

Start date: 15 August 2026 or as agreed.
