Om jobbet

The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 58 000 students and 6800 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.

The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, invites applications for a researcher position at the Department of Physiology.

Research within Perinatal Neuroscience aims to understand the biological and molecular mechanisms governing brain development during the perinatal period. This field focuses particularly on how disturbances in these processes can lead to brain injury, especially in preterm infants. By studying cellular signaling pathways, gene expression, and interactions between neurons, glial cells, and the vasculature, the research seeks to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the vulnerability of the immature brain. The goal is to identify novel strategies to prevent or treat perinatal brain injury and thereby improve neurological outcomes in preterm-born children.

Duties

The successful candidate will lead and develop research projects focusing on the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in brain development and injury during the perinatal period. The work will include experimental studies using transgenic animal models, molecular biology techniques, cell culture, and histological analysis of postmortem human brain tissue as well as experimental models. The project will also involve the use of advanced omics technologies, including spatial transcriptomics, to investigate molecular and cellular alterations associated with brain development and injury.

In addition to research, the successful candidate is expected to:
  • Prepare and submit scientific manuscripts and research grant applications.
  • Participate in collaborative research projects within and beyond the department.
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision of students at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
  • Play an active role in the development of the research environment within the Section of Physiology.

Qualifications

Required qualifications
  • PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, or a closely related field.
  • Documented research experience in neuroscience, particularly in brain development.
  • Experience in working with transgenic animal models.
  • Experience in cell culture, including handling of primary cells.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.

Meritorious qualifications
  • Experience in small-animal surgery.
  • Experience in microscopy, including fluorescence, light, and electron microscopy.
  • Experience in laboratory techniques such as Western blotting, PCR, and immunohistochemistry.
  • Excellent molecular biology laboratory skills.
  • Expertise in omics-based analyses (e.g., transcriptomics, proteomics, or spatial omics).
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of students in a research environment.

Great importance will be placed on personal suitability.

Employment

The employment is a permanent position, 100% of full-time, and is placed at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date: as soon as possible or as agreed. Probationary employment may be applied.
