About this opportunity:
Configuring complex systems or solution portfolios is more than just static rules or single-objective optimization - it's about understanding, explaining, and evolving configuration knowledge across domains and technologies.This thesis explores how different knowledge modeling and reasoning technologies - from feature models and graphs to cloud-based data warehouses and AI-assisted representations - can be combined to build explainable configuration intelligence. The goal is to study how machine reasoning and GenAI explanations can make configuration decisions understandable, traceable, and adaptive.
What you will do:
- Investigate how modeling choices (UVL, JSON-Schema, GraphDB, Snowflake, etc.) affect reasoning capability, scalability, and explainability.
- Develop a prototype pipeline that connects knowledge models, analytics, and GenAI explanation layers.
- Evaluate results on both decision accuracy and human interpretability (can users understand why a configuration is preferred? Or why a solution cannot be found?).
The skills you bring:
- Currently pursuing a Masters Degree in computer science, ML/AI or similar field.
- Background in optimization, knowledge representation & configuration modeling.
- Interest in reasoning & analytics, GenAI explainability.
- Python, Neo4j, UVL, Snowflake, etc.; familiarity with compliance frameworks is a plus.
- Suitable for 1 or 2 students.
