Data-driven life science (DDLS) uses data, computational methods and artificial intelligence to study biological systems and processes at all levels, from molecular structures and cellular processes to human health and global ecosystems. The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), coordinated by SciLifeLab, aims to recruit and train the next-generation of data-driven life scientists and to create globally leading computational and data science capabilities in Sweden. The program is funded with a total of 3.3 billion SEK (about 350 MUSD) over 12 years from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Foundation.
The DDLS program funds 50 high-profile young group leaders ("Fellows"), over 210 postdoctoral positions and has established a research school for 260 PhDs, including industry PhDs and postdocs. Fellows are recruited to the 11 participating host universities/organizations, but brought together under the DDLS program, which has four strategic areas: cell and molecular biology, evolution and biodiversity, precision medicine and diagnostics, epidemiology and biology of infection. For more information, please see www.scilifelab.se/data-driven.
During 2022-2024, the first and second round of 39 Fellows joined and now we are looking to recruit an additional group of 11 Fellows. Each DDLS Fellow will receive a recruitment package of 17 MSEK (about 1.6 MUSD) for a 5-year period, covering their own salary and other resources, such as salaries for PhD students and postdoc positions. The Fellowships are tenure-track positions with the host organizations, which assume the responsibility for the long-term faculty appointments following a tenure evaluation.
The future of life science is data-driven. Will you be leading the change with us? Then join us in this unique program!

Subject
Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics
Subject Description
At the University of Gothenburg, we are looking to fill the position as DDLS fellow in Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics.
Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics cover data integration, analysis, visualization, and data interpretation for patient stratification, discovery of biomarkers for disease risks, diagnosis, drug response and monitoring of health. Precision medicine research is expected to make use of existing strong assets in Sweden and abroad, such as molecular data (e.g. omics), imaging, electronic health care records, longitudinal patient and population registries and biobanks. The applicant is expected to have a strong computational focus on innovative development and application of novel data-driven methods relying on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or other computational techniques.
Job assignments
As the successful candidate, you are expected to initiate a competitive research programme and establish or further develop an independent line of research within data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics, as well as actively apply for external funding. The position requires active collaboration with the Sahlgrenska Academy, Faculty of Science and Technology, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, AstraZeneca, and Chalmers University of Technology.
You are also expected to actively participate in local meetings and activities within WCMTM, attend DDLS programme meetings, and collaborate within the established national network comprising the four Wallenberg Centres for Molecular Medicine at The University of Gothenburg, Lund University, Linköping University, and Umeå University, as well as SciLifeLab in Stockholm/Uppsala.
The position includes planning and teaching at doctoral, master's and undergraduate programs. Teaching responsibilities include lectures, exercises, examinations, and supervision of PhD students and medical students, as well as students on advanced and undergraduate level. A successful candidate without higher education teaching qualifications is expected to complete such training within one year of appointment.
As the successful candidate you are expected to achieve proficiency in Swedish, both written and spoken, at a minimum B2 level according to the GERS, no later than six months before the end of the employment as Associate Senior Lecturer. The University of Gothenburg will offer mandatory Swedish language courses as part of the employment.
Eligibility
Eligibility requirements for employment as an Associate Senior Lecturer are specified in Chapter 4, Section 4a of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
To qualify for the position, the applicant must hold a PhD in a subject that the employer finds relevant to the position, or have equivalent scientific competence.
Preference is given to applicants who have been awarded a PhD or have equivalent scientific competency no more than seven years before the expiration date of this announcement. Applicants who obtained their degree earlier may also be considered if special circumstances apply, such as parental leave, leave of absence due to illness, or similar reasons. The reasons and extent of leave of absence should be clearly specified in the application and confirmed by certificates.
Proficiency in teaching in either Swedish or English is required.
Assessment Criteria
The assessment criteria for employment as Associate Senior Lecturer are stated in Chapter 4, Section 4a of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
Assessment of the applications will be based primarily on scientific merits and secondarily on pedagogical and administrative merits and skills.
When assessing scientific proficiency, particular emphasis will be placed on the level of independently performed research within data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics - for example, usage of computational tools that integrate molecular and clinical data for translational research and diagnostic development, thereby enabling personalized healthcare.
Scientific merits are assessed based on scientific quality rather than merely on quantity of production. Documented success in attracting external funding in national or international competition, as well as participation in national and international collaborative research projects, will be considered merits. Scientific merits will also be evaluated based on the quality of the submitted research program and of demonstrated ability to develop and lead research relevant to the position.
When assessing pedagogical merits, special emphasis will be placed on documented experience in planning, conducting, and leading teaching at undergraduate and doctoral levels. The quality of teaching must be documented in a way that allows assessment. Demonstrated ability to supervise students at undergraduate and doctoral levels is also considered merits.
Administrative proficiency will be assessed with particular regard to experience from large research projects or collaborative projects.
The overall assessment of the applications will consider proficiency and potential for development, ability to carry out the duties of the position, to cooperate with others, and to contribute to the positive development of the organization.
Other Information
The decision on the DDLS recruitment package is subject to a final decision by the SciLifeLab Board. The successful candidate is expected to apply for supplementary funding with national and international grants as part of their own and their group's development. An individual scientific and educational development plan will be determined upon agreement between the individual and the head of department. Promotion to Senior lecturer is expected within four to five years.
In Gothenburg, DDLS Fellows will be part of the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) where 29 research group leaders are currently active in different research fields. WCMTM was established in collaboration with the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, Region Västra Götaland, and AstraZeneca as part of a national agenda to further strengthen Sweden's position within molecular medicine. The Wallenberg Centre is located in Gothenburg, with activities at Sahlgrenska Academy and the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and AstraZeneca, to ensure unique translational research environments in the interface between academia, healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry.
Internationally recruited staff are offered a contracted relocation package and tax advisory services (Global Mobility support).
